Do you desire more harmony in your business or relationships, and have prayed for positive change with no results? You are not alone. Many people feel disconnected during prayer and become discouraged because they do not see negative situations turning around. Often, we have tuned out mentally from God.

Emmet Fox, a New Thought minister from the 1940’s, taught that focusing on God first produces results. His book Alter Your Life helped many people understand their relationship to God, and to bring themselves into harmony with the law of being. His essay, The Seven Main Aspects of God, explained how to embrace the idea of divine principle to set negative conditions right.

Let’s complete our series on prayer and learn to put your energy and thoughts in the right place.

The Seventh Aspect: Principle

The seventh aspect of God is principle. I see this as the unchangeable structure, or rule, behind our living existence.

For example, the principle of thermal expansion says that most solids, liquids and gases expand when heated. Most materials are subject to thermal expansion and they tend to expand when heated, and contract when cooled.  Bridges are built with metal expansion joints, so they can expand and contract without ruining the structure. If you heat a piece of steel, it will expand, no matter if it is in a bridge or another kind of steel structure. Size or design makes no difference. The principle of expansion is the same because it is unchanging. The principle is not the action of making the bridge or any other product.  It is not the steel.  It is the fact that matter expands under heat.

Emmet points out another principle: The angles of a triangle always add up to 180 degrees. This principle exists in all triangles.  The area of any triangle can be a square inch or a square mile. The principle is the same. The law of gravitation is another principle that never changes nor ceases to operate.

These principles are always true. They do not change. There are no exceptions, as far as we know. They have been true a million years ago and will be true tomorrow and many days after.

God is Principle, the principle of perfect harmony, and this is the nature of his creation. Perfect harmony is the law of being. Prayer is answered because God is principle and successful prayer, which is prayer that produces results, brings you into harmony with the law of being.  In prayer, you cannot change the universal law and will see no results by asking God to change the laws for your convenience.  For example, if you pray for the law of gravity to change, so your friends won’t die if they leap off a 100-story skyscraper, you are asking for a principle to change, in this case, the law of gravity.  You do not pray to change the principle or laws of nature.  You pray to tune into the principle that already exists, which is perfect harmony.  This is the way to set things right in your life.

Think Big

We spend a lot of time agonizing over defeat and difficult situations. The reason they occur is because we have tuned out mentally from God, or the divine principle of our being. It is difficult to watch the news and believe that the world is in perfect harmony, given all the strife and political unrest we currently see. It seems challenging to believe that the world is harmonious; therefore, the challenge is to think big. We must rise to a higher level of consciousness, and know that all that we see is governed by divine principle (and remember, it is an illusion because matter is not reality!) God is intelligence and does not waste in the universal totality. There is an intelligence and love so vast where each element, individual, or thing plays an exceptional role in a perfect process.

I like to think that all life is involved in a learning process, and our self-development journey is to evolve to higher consciousness. It is the essential integration of many experiences, both perceived good and bad, at an individual, national, and global level.  Everything and everyone has a purpose that is governed by the divine principle of perfect harmony.  Any intelligence so vast could not be otherwise.

When you are discouraged, or you have feelings of prejudice, hostility, resentment, or malice toward another, it is helpful to realize that Principle is the power that will help you shift to better circumstances. This is the time to ‘rise above’ a situation and pour love into it.  It is time to understand that the divine principle of perfect harmony is the only power that exists.

Daily Practice: Practicing the Presence of God as Principle

  1. Give your attention to God, not your problem. Claim you understand that there is a principle of perfect harmony in the universe. See the universe as a vast collection of life, experiences, and events.
  2. Consider a difficult situation you are experiencing. Claim that harmony works through you. Acknowledge that divine principle is at work in your life and in the life of others. See that an organized structure holds the universe together.
  3. Recognize that divine principle is an aspect of God. Know that it is unchanging and powerful. Feel harmony working through you. See yourself as one who brings harmony to any situation.
  4. Shift your energy to a positive state, where you feel the difficulty in your life is changing for the better. See a positive outcome, and claim that the situation is healed. Be confident.
  5. Give thanks for the positive outcome and all you have received.

Successful Prayer

These aspects of God are always true, so in prayer, it is helpful to think about two or more of them. Be diligent and pray regularly. At a minimum, when you feel angry or depressed, or a negative condition arises, turn back to one of more of these aspects and claim that the presence of God is at work in your life. Claim that these qualities are with you always, and work through you.

The entire universe, and everything we experience, is a complex, interdependent system of thoughts.  One thing cannot change without changing another.  Therefore, to change our situations or the way we experience life, we must first make change in our minds. All else will follow!
